Quick Thoughts - 12/30

Here are some quick thoughts on a lazy Saturday afternoon…..

1) Hall of Fame – If I had a vote, here is who I’d vote for…

Cal RipkenDoesn’t need discussing

Tony Gwynn – 8 time batting champion

Goose Gossage - Here’s where it becomes “grey”…. He has over 300 saves and virtually invented the term “closer”… Unlike today’s “closers” who just come in during the 9th inning, it wasn’t unusual for Gossage to enter in the the 7th and finish up the last 2 inning. Sutter went in last year and Gossage was better! He’s already in the Fu Man Chu Hall of Fame, so he has to be put in here!

Jack Morris – For those of you that don’t know/remember him, he was “The” big game pitcher of the 80’s. He won more games in the 80’s than any other pitcher, the ace of 3 World Championship teams, made 14 opening day starts and in a memorable performance, pitched 10 shutout innings in the 7th game of the 91 World Series, where he was named MVP of the series. The reason it’s taken him awhile get elected? His attitude towards the media wasn’t exactly stellar….. His most famous run in with the media had to do when he told a female reporter, she should be happy he was talking with her because “I don’t usually talk to women unless they’re on top of me or I’m on top of them!” Sounds fair........

Steve Garvey – Once again someone who’s off field behavior has overshadowed what he did on the field… He was the ultimate winner, eight .300 seasons, 10 All – Star appearances, a regular season MVP, 2 all star game MVP’s, 4 gold glove awards, a National League record 1,207 consecutive games played and a MLB record 193 consecutive, errorless games at 1st base. You may not have liked him, but name me another 1st baseman better during Garvey’s playing time???

That’s it for the Hall of Fame and yes I left McGwire off the list…….

2) Bowl Games – Only two I care about:

A) BCS Tostitos Bowl – I don’t think Florida has a chance. Ohio State 37, Florida 17. Most over hyped player in college? Chris Leak. He’s not even the best QB on his team……

B) Rose Bowl – Should be close but I’m not a Michigan fan so I think USC pulls it out. USC 31, Michigan 27. Comes down to whether Booty can handle Michigan’s pressure.

3) Little Tiger – Now we’ll see what THAT does to his career…… Personally I hope it’s a Tigress not a Tiger and she looks just like mom but with darker skin! But hey, that's just me!

4) Tyson Arrested for Cocaine – Is this even a surprise? Does anyone even care at this point? Hopefully he gets his life straightened out soon otherwise we’ll be reading about him in the obituaries…. I still remember being in my early 20’s and boxing experts were saying when he retires he’ll be the best ever. Guess that's not going happen......

5) Michael Jordan getting divorced – Finally….. man that’s been going on for years, good to finally put it out of it’s misery.. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say he’ll start dating someone REALLY HOT looking……. She’ll be a model/wannabe actress, not a well known celebrity. Someone like Adriana Lima (Victoria Secret model) or actress Gabrielle Union (who just separated from her NFL husband...). On the other hand, I think him and Vanessa Williams would look stunning together..... What am I writing a gossip column now?????

6) “Swimming With the Fishes”Couldn’t resist this…. The GM for an Italian league soccer team received in the mail a severed head of a young goat, covered in blood… He wasn’t home when it arrived in the mail on December 22nd, so his wife put it under the tree and opened it on Christmas Day. Oh those soccer hooligans!

Most Memorable Stories With My Fellow Crashers - 12/28

Thousands of emails keep pouring into my inbox all asking the same thing….. “Bill what are your most memorable/top sports stories of 2006?" Yes I know ESPN has their list as does CNNSI, Sporting News, etc…. but do theirs come with quotes from Wedding Crashers????

I think not!

Ok, so without further ado, here are a 1/5th of Bill’s Top Sport Stories for 06, starting with number 12 (drum roll please………):

12) Craig: “I Craig, take you Christina, to be my wife, my best friend and my 1st mate. Through sickness and health, through clear skies and squalls…..”
Christina Cleary: “I, Christina, take you, Craig, to be my best friend and my captain…. To be your anchor and your sail….. your starboard and your port.”

Possibly the most touching quote from the movie goes to the most touching story in sports this past year. Back on May 20th, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro fractures his hind leg at the start of the Preakness. After an infection almost forced the trainers to put him down, he turned the corner and is doing well now. His racing days are over, but it looks like there’ll be a filly or two in his future that’ll be his starboard and his port!

11) John Beckwith: “Don’t waste your time on girls with hats. They tend to be very proper.”

Jeremy Grey: “Yeah? Well, the proper girl in the hat just eye-@$&*ed the @$* out of me.”

Just as it’s surprising to get those reactions from a “proper girl” it was just as surprising what happened on September 6th. MLB’s 1st no hitter in 2 years came from Florida Marlins rookie pitcher Anibal Sanchez. He shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 and made all of Red Sox nation say “why did we trade him again????????”

10)Chaz Ringold: “What is she doing back there? I never know what she’s doing….”

And neither do we when it comes to Barry Bonds! Is Barry on steroids, should he be in the hall of fame or should he be in jail for perjury? Well we do know 1 thing he’s doing, he’s breaking records. On May 28th, he hit his 715th home run by passing Babe Ruth and moving into second place on the all time list. He ended the season with 734 leaving him only 21 behind Hank Aaron. Barring his knee’s going out (or someone finally coming out with direct evidence showing he cheated) expect him to move into 1st place in home runs sometime around July 20th (yes that’s my prediction).

9) John Beckwith: “Claire’s mom just made me grab her hooters.”
Jeremy Grey: “Well snap out of it! What, a hot older woman made you feel her cans? Stop crying like a little girl!”
John Beckwith: “I wasn’t crying like a little girl.”
Jeremy Grey: “Why don’t you try getting jacked off under the table in front of the whole damn family and have some real problems, jackass. Hey, what were they like anyway? They looked pretty good, are they real? Are they built for speed or comfort? What’d you do with them? Motorboat? You play the motorboat? Ssssssssppppppllllllllllll. You motorboatin son of a bitch! You old sailor you! Where is she? She still in the house???”

Ahhh, probably the most quoted line in the movie, an instant classic…… Well right now we have a classic player having a season that’ll be talked about for years on end. On Dec. 10th, LaDainian Tomlinson broke the single season touchdown record in just 13 games. He put up numbers 27, 28 and 29 in a magnificent 3 touchdown performance against the Seattle Seahawks. With 1 game left in the regular season he has 33 touchdowns and barring some unforeseen injury, a ticket to Canton 7 years from now when he retires. Mrs. Cleary is built for comfort, LT is built for speed. Way to go you old sailor you!

8) Secretary Cleary: “Once Zack and Claire tie the knot, two of the great American families will finally be united”.
John Beckwith: “And then you can challenge the Klingons for interstellar domination”.

And speaking of two of the great American families, two of the great American baseball teams hooked up this year in the World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers. The series wasn’t overly exciting with the Cardinals coming out on top 4-1, but the fact that 2 of the most storied franchises in the history of baseball were playing made it memorable. The victory by the Cardinals gave them 10 World Series Titles which is the most for any team in the National League. Now they can challenge the Klingons…….

7) John Beckwith: “What’s wrong with you?”
Jeremy Grey: “What do you mean “what’s wrong with me?” What’s wrong with you?”
John Beckwith: “No, what’s wrong with you?”
Jeremy Grey: “No, what’s wrong with you? You’re projecting!”
John Beckwith: “Drop it.”
Jeremy Grey: “You drop it! You stop projecting on me! Why don’t you go enjoy yourself while I go ice my balls and spit up blood.”
John Beckwith: “Drop it!”
Jeremy Grey: “Team player!”

On June 20th, the Miami Heat wrapped up their first ever NBA title behind their “team player” Dwayne Wade. Shaq won his 4th championship and in the process shoved it down the throats of the losers in LaLa Land! Miami started off in the series losing the 1st 2 games but then proceeded to win the final 4 and downing the Mavericks 4-2. Will it be Shaq Diesel’s last hurrah or will he be ready come playoff time to “project” his will onto his opponents? We’ll have to wait and see…

6) Jeremy Grey: “Tattoo on the lower back? Might as well be a bull’s eye.”

Speaking of a bull’s eye and the Lakers, on Jan. 22nd (my birthday…) Kobe Bryant turned in one of the all time great individual, exciting performances when he scored 81 points in a victory over the Toronto Raptors. It was the 2nd highest scoring game in the history of the league and it gave the NBA a much needed shot in the arm. He was 28-46 from the floor and 18-20 from the free throw line. After being down by 18 early in the 3rd quarter, Kobe scored 27 points in the quarter and another 28 in the 4th quarter carrying the Lakers to a 122-104 victory. His 55 points in the second half was only 4 behind the record of 59 held by Wilt Chamberlain when he had his 100 pt game back in 1960. And unlike that game that wasn’t televised, this game will be running on NBA Classic 50 years from now and you can say to your grandkids “I remember that night when Black Mamba went for 81, he was unstoppable!”

5) Jeremy Grey: “Gloria, I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching recently, and I think I’m ready to take this relationship, our relationship to the next level.”
Gloria Cleary: “Jeremy, I am so ready to take it to the next level.”
Jeremy Grey: “Really?”
Gloria Cleary: “Yeah. Do you want to watch me with another girl? How about those Brazilian twins we met at the ball game?”
Jeremy Grey: “I was thinking more along the lines of an engagement.”
Gloria Cleary: “Oh Jeremy, I do!”
Jeremy Grey: “I love you.”
Gloria Cleary: “I love you.”

I can think of few things as exciting as watching Gloria with Brazilian twins, but this one came close! On Sept 18th the LA Dodgers hit back to back to back to back home runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie up their game against the Padres and then won it in the bottom of the 10th when Nomahhh hit a walk off 2 run home run! One of the amazing things about this that the last 6 hits for “Los Dodgers” were all home runs, as Kenny Lofton hit a solo shot in the 6th………. Ok, now about those Brazilian twins………………..

4) Flip: “Yeah! Crab cakes and Football. That’s what Maryland does!!”

Well I don’t know about crab cakes, but the Pittsburgh Steelers do know football as they finally got their “1 for the thumb” as they beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL. Ben Roethlisberger became the youngest starting QB ever to win a Super Bowl, “Fast” Willie Parker showed he was the real deal and Hines Ward took home the MVP. To top it off, a class act in Jerome Bettis finally got his ring after 13 years in the league and he rode off into the sunset as the 5th all time rusher in NFL history. Hopefully he had a crab cake or 2 to celebrate!

3) Chazz Reinhold: “Yeah, her boyfriend just died. In a hang-gliding accident! What an idiot! What a loser! (Chazz imitating dead boyfriend) “Hey, I’m hang-gliding! Aaaaahhh! Take a picture, honey, I’m dead!!!”

One of the funniest “inspiring” scenes in the movie fits well with one of the funest, inspiring championship teams of the year. The Florida Gators rolled thru the NCAA tournament winning their 1st ever men’s hoop championship. Led by Sophomore Joakim Noah, Florida blew out UCLA 73-57 in the finals. The team is young, talented, energetic and led by Billy Donovan. Four of their five starters return this year and come March Madness will be looking to defend their championship!

2) Gloria Cleary: “Don’t ever leave me!”
Jeremy Grey: “Ever.”
Gloria Cleary: “Good. ‘Cause I’d find you!”

Ok, who was the psycho athlete of 2006? Well back in July during the world cup final won by Italy, French star Zinedine Zidane (the Wayne Gretzky of soccer….) committed which can only be described as one of the stupidest and psychotic things ever in the Championship of a major event. The two teams were tied early in the second half when Zidane let his emotions run away with him and he head butted an Italian defender in the chest … Italy went on to win in penalty kicks.

1)John Beckwith: “Rule #1: Never leave a fellow crasher behind.”

That’s right, you win as a team and lose as a team, and nobody was better about the winning than Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns. Vince put the team on his back during the season and in what many are calling the greatest BCS Championship game ever! In a back and forth contest, Young ran in the winning touchdown on a 4th and 5 play with just a few seconds left to lead Texas to a 41-38 win. It gave the Longhorns their 4th national championship but 1st since 1970. Hook Em Horns!

Well there you have it, my most memorable sporting moments from the year. I’m looking forward to what 2007 holds and see if it can compare to 06.

Hope everyone enjoys New Years eve and if you’re out and about please remember to “drink responsibly”!

The Flag Football Bowl - 12/20

Hi everyone:

With the pro bowl announcement coming out yesterday the talk shows and media are spouting off about who got "jobbed" and should be there..... Here's my opinion on it...

WHO THE HELL CARES?????

Everyone knows this is (for the most part) just a popularity contest... If you are a "name" player who's been there multiple times already, well chances are good your ticket to Hawaii is in the mail irregardless of how you actually performed on the field! Done deal........ Yes occasionally that's not the case, but basically that's how it works.

Secondly, who really cares about the NFL pro bowl? Half the people selected don't show anyway (mysterious injuries always seem to occur around February 12th every year....) and the half that do show, decide not to tackle or play hard because no one wants to get hurt. So really this is just a bunch of millionaires playing flag football in Hawaii. Can anyone tell me what the ratings are for this "event" as no one I know even watches it anymore.

Finally the thing that really irratates me about this is how people always print lists and talk about who "should" be there but got left off. That's fine, I have no problem with that, but at the same time tell me who shouldn't be there.. They always seem to leave that out... Only so many people can go and xyz writer is complaining that a player on their favorite team got left off. This obviously happens in all sports as every year in July you hear people wanting to make the baseball all star team 40-50 people instead of 26..... Let's just tell everyone they're an all star or pro bowler and just see who turns up!

"He Kelly Leaked it" - 12/15

Ah.... for those of us that have coached youth baseball, how many times has that saying come out of your mouth when a player takes a ball that didn't belong to him?

Have you ever thought about whatever became of the actor who played Kelly Leak on the Bad News Bears? Well he's now in his mid 40's and doing well.
Thanks to Colin Tanner for the current photo of "Kelly".

Where Have You Gone Angels? - 12/11

You all know my love of the Red Sox but I wanted to talk for a minute about my adopted team the Angels. Being a season ticket holder I have a vested interest in them doing well, after all I need them to get into the playoffs so I can make my money back!

After Moreno made all that noise back in September about improving their club they've been very quite this offseason, making 1 "big" deal (and I use that term loosely......). The Dodgers have gone out and made some major moves which have allowed them to take over the "buzz" here in Southern California. Moreno has said he wants the Angels to be the team identified with LA (hence the name change), but if he or Stoneman aren't going to go out and do whats necessary, they will continue to be the second team in this market.

What do I think they should do? Here are a couple ideas:

1) Sign Barry Zito - This would solve a couple problems. First off it gives them a top line starter who happens to be a lefthander which they need. Secondly it would allow them to take and package Ervin Santana in a trade for another hitter. Finally getting Zito would make sure he doesn't resign with the A's, where in weakening a division rival (like the Dodgers did with Schmidt).

2) Trade for a hitter - I'm not thrilled with whats still available in the free agent market for hitters, so it's time to be creative and trade some minor league prospects for that guy. Who's rumored to be available in a trade? Rumors keep coming out of Atlanta about Andrew Jones, or possibly Vernon Wells in Toronto. The problem with them, is they're both centerfielders which happen to be the position of the Angels "big" free agent signing, so that won't happen. Most likely they'll go after a position player like Adam LaRoche (also of Atlanta) who is from Orange County and would be excited to come back home...

No matter what, I hope they don't go to spring training with the roster they have now. If so, it could be a very ugly season....

Volcanoes Tournament In Cooperstown ........ 11/29

Hi everyone:

I thought I'd try out a new internet site called Jumpcut by putting together a little video from some shots that were left over on my video camera.

Click on the title to see some shots from our team back in Boston and Cooperstown back in the summer of 06. Let the video load before clicking the "play" button as the video will run much smoother.....

Man Ram - 11/28

As the hot stove rumors swirl about Manny Ramirez being traded this week, I want to go on record saying I'm against it. Here is a guy who's averaged 35 homeruns, 102 rbi's and a batting average of .325 over his career. Say what you want about his perceived attitude or lack of fielding ability (which I disagree with by the way...), the guy just FN rakes! Year in and year out.

I don't care who they pick up to replace him (or most likely multiple players to replace him), no one will give you what he brings to the table. With out him in the lineup batting 4th, expect Big Papi to be walked about 200 times next year...... Frustrating......

The only deal I think is exceptable is one in which the Yankees did with Sheffield. You better get someones top minor league pitching prospects which 1) will either turn into a stud pitcher down the road or 2) they can turn around (within a year or 2) and deal for someone else's stud player. That's it...

Here's 1 Red Sox fan that'll miss "Manny being Manny".

Sox and Mats ............11/15

Thought I'd way in on this....

I like it. Hell it's not my money. Is it a gamble? Absolutely, but I think every now and then you need to say f@$k it and swing for the fences. If Matsusaka turns out to be as good as most expect, the Red Sox get a 26yr old #1 starter to go along with Schilling, Beckett and Papelbon (moved back to the rotation this year). Not a bad rotation....... If he sucks or just can't pitch over here, they've blown a bunch of money, but I think it's worth the risk. They've got the money to spend, why not spend it. The Yankees out spent Boston by about $80 million last year, so I don't want to hear any Skankee fans complaining about Boston trying to buy a championship!

Boston now needs to go out and get a closer, but as of yet haven't heard who they're targeting.

OT - I'm In Love With A Serial Killer............. 11/11

I thought I'd deviate away from sports for a bit and give you a tv recommendation.

If you have Showtime, you have to check out Dexter on Sunday nights at 9pm.

In a nutshell, Dexter Morgan is a forensic pathologist by day for the Miami police department and a serial killer at night (although he only kills people that "deserve" it..).

It has great acting, it's well written and does a good job of breaking up the serious nature of it with humor. Needless to say, I highly recommend it. Here is a clip:

http://tinyurl.com/ygsl68

I'd recommend watching from the beginning so go to Showtime on Demand and start from episode 1.

If you're a fan of drama, comedy and who done it, this is the show for you!

A Fabulous Update - 10/31

Now that the season is half way over, here is my fabulous Top 10 in the NFL:

1) Indianapolis - Big test coming up this weekend in NE (which I think the Patriots will win by the way....), but as of now, they are doing everything they need to do to be in the top spot. Their defense (or lack there of) will be their undoing come playoff time, but for now, they stay at the top.

2) Da Bears - The other undeafeted team has to be in the 2nd spot. They have a murderous schedule this month with road games at the Giants, Jets and Patriots so we'll know where they stand then. The defense has been phenomenal (as expected) and the offense has finally stepped up. We'll see where it takes them....

3) Patriots - They continue to improve as the season goes along. Defense is playing great and their offense is starting to hit it's stride as Brady and the new receivers continue to get comfortable with each other. With Maroney (mid season offensive rookie of the year), Dillon and a young hungry offensive line running the ball, this team is built for the cold weather come January. If they get home field thru out the playoffs, mark them down for a 4th super bowl victory.

4) Chargers - I'm hot and cold with this team but when they're on, they're as good as anyone in football. They're tough both sides of ball and have playmakers everywhere. I like Rivers and think he's been doing a great job. My one issue with them is Schottenheimer. For all his regular season wins, he's never been to a super bowl and I expect the samething to happen again this year. Merriman being out for 4 games will hurt and cost them homefield come playoff time where they'll be eliminated in a surprising early loss........

5) Broncos - Tough game they lost at home this weekend which I think showed some weaknesses and will be exploiteded by teams down the road. They went into NE a few weeks ago and dominated but I don't think they've improved any since then. The 2 games against San Diego will decide the division and I'm not sure Jake "the snake" is up to it... Each week that goes by the media and fans keep calling for Cutler to come in and "save" the Broncos and that can't lead to a harmonious locker room...

6) Giants - I was down on them earlier in the year but after watching them the last couple weeks, I've been real impressed. Solid all around and they don't seem to hurt themselves. If you want to beat them, you better come ready to play. Should be a great game on the Nov. 12th when the Bears come to town.

7) Falcons - Well Vick is teasing us again by his play in the last couple of weeks. If he could consistently do this, he'd finally live up to all the hype. Unfortunately for the ATL fans, I just don't see him being able to continue to do this... I look at him as the jeckle and hyde of the nfl. On the other hand, I have Crumpler on my fantasty team and am looking at picking up Jenkins, so I hope Vick can keep this up!

8) Saints - Gotta hand it to Sean Payton, he's done a great job coming in and putting together a solid team. I think they are truely a year away from being a serious contender, but they are fun to watch. Best rookie on the team? Marques Colston out of Bill Cosby's alma mater, Hofstra! That's not a knock against Reggie Bush, but Colston has been playing unbelievable and deserves serious rookie of the year consideration.

9) Ravens - I have them a little lower than most, but I've definetly soured on McNair and the offense. Obviously the defense is one of the best, but does McNair really give them a better shot then Boller? At this point in Air McNair's career, I keep wondering how he can direct an offense with a fork sticking out his back..... Sounds difficult.

And #10 on my fabulous list is:

10) Cowboys - With the Jaguars close behind..... I'm not sure how Romo is going to do. Could help or hurt. We'll have to see. This is such a combustible team I just have no idea where to put them. There are a lot things I like and a lot of things I don't ..... I just don't know. Same holds true with the Jaguars. If they go full time with Garrard, I think they'd be more dangerous than with Leftwich. Also I like their running game now with Jones-Drew and Taylor.

We'll there you have it, my mid season top 10. Obviously there are a few other teams out there that could step up and contend (Seahawks / Eagles come to mind) but I think these teams are the only contenders after a half season of play.

And You Wonder Why Boston Didn't Resign Him 9/30

It would have taken 5yrs and 60 million to bring him back to Boston, and this is why when a pitcher hits his mid 30's you don't do it...

I Am A God 9/16

A fantasy football god that is!

This year I decided to just do 2 leagues with 1 being for fun and the other a little more serious (and more money). I'll keep you up to date with the serious 1 which is called "Dude Ranch" and has 12 teams.

My team is called "Drama Time" named in honor of the multiple emmy and oscar nominated actor Johnny "Drama" Chase (brother of Vincent Chase of Aquaman and Streets of Brooklyn fame.....).

We have 14 players on the roster with 9 active each week (1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1K, 1D and 1Flex position (could be rb,wr or te). Here's my current roster:

Actives:

Drew Brees - qb
Edgerrin James - rb
Willis McGahee - rb
Hines Ward - wr
Donald Driver - wr
Donte Stallworth - Flex
Alge Crumpler - te
Neil Rackers - k
Da Bears - D

Reserves:

Ahman Green - rb
Isaac Bruce - wr
Jeff Wilkins - k
Trent Green - qb
Dallas Clark - te

Money - cost to play the league is $425 with additional costs along the way. A trade cost's $8, picking a player up from waivers or free agency cost's $2, moving a player from active to reserve (or vice versa if you will) cost's $2.

The winner of the league gets $2000 (2nd $1000, 3rd $500). If you win your division (league is split into 2 divisions) you win $250. If you have the most points in a week you win $25 and the most points for the season get's all the transaction money (which judging from the 1st week, could be a lot).

I'm happy with how the draft went. I drafted 9th and picked Edge with my 1st pick and McGahee with my 2nd (pick #14). If you have hopes of winning, you need rb's and I got 2 of the best. I was hoping Frank Gore would fall to me in the 3rd, but he got snapped up prior to me picking. I went Ward and Driver next and after that whoever I felt was best. To show you how valuable I consider QB's, I actually took a kicker (Racker) before taking Bree's in the 12th round. Who I really wanted for a QB was Kurt Warner, but someone else selected him in the 11th round.

Week #1 - Drama Time took on Cool Runnings with Drama Time winning the week 121-112. Those were the 2 highest point totals for the week and with the highest overall score bringing home the $25 "win" and taking over 1st place in my division. I got big performances from Donte Stallworth and Da Bears, with solid outings from Edge, McGahee, Driver, Ward and Rackers. I actually had started Trent Green at QB but he got knocked out early and wasn't much of a help to my dominating week 1 victory (only got me 2 points).

For week #2 Drama Time goes on the road to face the 1-0 Don't Know Shit About Football led by the top pick in the draft Larry Johnson. I'm tempted to sit out Ward and put Ahman Green in as I think he's going to have a big game (and Ward still is bothered by a hamstring problem). It'll be a game time decision which way I go.....

Prediction - Drama Time has another solid outing putting up 110 points to out distance DKSAF who only score 98.

Current Record - 1-0 and in 1st place

Money Out:

$427

Money In:

$25

Power Rankings 9/14

After week one, here's my fabulous top 10:

1) Pittsburgh - defending champion stays #1 till beaten.
2) Baltimore - Still one of the best defensively and McNair won't hurt them like Boller.
3) Philadelphia - I'm rating them higher than others, but after they beat the Gints this weekend, people will jump on board. You saw it here first!
4) Indianapolis - 2 things I don't like about them 1) running back by committee and 2) defense is too small and can get muscled by physical teams.
5) Patriots - Too many people get caught up in what they didn't bring back, not what they have. Improved running game will help control the ball.
6) Chicago Bears - Like Baltimore, with their defense they're in every game. If offense can continue to grow, they are my pick to represent the NFC in the SB.
7) Seattle - I'm putting them here only because they were in the SB last year. They're the class of a weak division which will help them out record wise, but I think this team peaked last year. Branch won't help them out like the media thinks and their offensive line took a big hit.
8) Jacksonville - Here's another team I like a lot. Call them my sleeper pick to go to the SB. Suffocating defense, smart QB and respected head coach. They went 12-4 last season and no one seems to be talking about them...
9) NY Giants - I'm still not sold on them, but they have a lot of weapons. We'll see how they do against Philly on Sunday.
10) Minnesota - Went into RFK and played a nice game. I like their new head coach a lot, he understands how you win in the NFL (defense and a punishing running game). He went out during the off season and brought in another stud offensive lineman (Hutchinson) to go with McKinnie. Brad Johnson does here what Steve McNair will do in Baltimore, manage the game and not cost his team a win.

Those knocking on the door? Dallas, Falcons, Chargers, Bengals.

I have a secret 9/9

I love Peyton Manning........

God knows I've tried to hate him. Quite frankly, I have every reason to.

1) He plays for a big rival of my favorite team
2) He whines
3) He's WAY OVER RATED by the media

But I gotta say he comes across in his commercials as a genuine down to earth guy who could be your next door neighbor....

So there I've said it. I love Peyton Manning and I'd love to have him be a back up to Brady on the Patriots......

Ciao,

Bill

Hey look, I have a Mock Draft! 4-28

I've read about 75 different predictions in the past week by the "experts" which tells me no one has any idea what's going to happen so I thought I'd give you my prediction. Let's see how wrong I can be!

1) Houston - Reggie Bush - USC
2) New Orleans - Mario Williams - North Carolina St
3) Tennessee - Matt Leinert - USC - I keep hearing they'll take Young but that is a smoke screen. Fisher is a USC alum and Chow is Leinerts former offensive coordinator there. Tennessee is hoping someone will jump up and want to make a trade in order to get Young, hence all the rumors going around.
4) Jets - D'Brickasaw Ferguson - Virginia - Not a sexy pick, but a stud offensive lineman. Keep in mind the Belichick ties here now in the staff. They will not pick a quaterback, running back or receiver this high as you can ALWAYS find that lower in the draft..... They'll draft for value.
5) Packers - AJ Hawk - The Ohio State. This pick and the 49ers pick next, I see everyone predicting this so I'll go with it......
6) 49'ers - Vernon Davis - Maryland
7. Oakland - Vince Young - Texas - the wild card... Can Al Davis pass on a talent??? No.
8. Buffalo - Haloti Ngata - Oregon State
9. Detroit - Michael Huff - Texas
10. Arizona - Jay Cutler - Vanderbilt
11. St. Louis - Jimmy Williams - Virginia Tech
12. Cleveland - Chad Greenway - Iowa
13. Baltimore - Brodrick Bunkley - Florida State
14. Philadelphia - Bobby Carpenter - Ohio State
15. Denver (from Atlanta) - every "expert" I read has them taking a wide receiver, so I'll go with one also - Chad Jackson - Florida
16. Miami - Winston Justice - Miami - They need protection for Culpepper, so I'll go with the best offensive lineman on the board. However Santonio Holmes might go here too....
17. Minnesota - Ernie Sims - Florida St. - they continue building the defense.
18. Dallas - Manny Lawson - North Carolina St.
19. San Diego - Antonio Cromartie- Florida St. - No player has been shooting up the draft boards quicker recently as Cromartie. He's coming back from a torn ACL and didn't take a snap in 05, but is 1 of the most talented players in the draft. Has the same potential as Champ Bailey...
20. Kansas City - Tye Hill - Clemson
21. New England - Kamerion Wimbley - Florida St. - a big time defensive end who could go as high as 12. I keep reading they'll take a running back to start replacing Corey Dillon but NE does not select running backs this high..... also if Cromartie falls to them here, they won't be able to get their card in quick enough as they'd love to have him!
22. San Franciso - They were hoping for Wimbley, so if NE passes on him, they take him..... But seeing as how I do have him gone, I'll go with - Richard Marshall - Fresno State.
23. Tampa Bay - Donte Witner - Ohio State - versatile player capable of playing 4 positions on the defense.
24. Cincinnati - Jason Allen - Tennessee
25. N.Y. Giants - Santonio Holmes - Ohio State - Giants are amazed he's dropped this far and although they were planning on going defense, they get an incrediable player at 25.
26. Chicago - With Jerry Azumah (UNH alum....) retiring, they'll go cornerback - Jonathon Joseph - South Carolina
27. Carolina - Lendale White - USC - best big back in the draft.
28. Jacksonville - Thomas Howard - UNLV - Del Rio likes linebackers and Howard is as athletic as they come.
29. NY Jets (from Denver through Atlanta) - Nick Mangold, a center, was who I was going to give them but with Cedric Houston in an auto accident, I think they take - Deangelo Williams - Memphis.
30. Indianapolis - Laurance Maroney - Minnesota. With the loss of "Edge", they're thrilled to have 1 of the top running backs fall to them.
31. Seattle - Ashton Youboty - Ohio State
32. Pittsburgh - Sinorice Moss - Miami - Santana's brother and capable of taking over the 3rd wide receiver spot left vacant by Randal El leaving.

A couple notes about the draft. Obviously I didn't factor in any trades (which I don't see happening much in the 1st round anyways), but if someone makes a jump up to get one of the big 3 QB's, then the picks could change drastically. Secondly, concerning the Patriots and a running back, if they do select one look for them to go with Joseph Addai out of LSU in the 3rd or 4th round.

I also want to go out on a limb and say that 12 years from now when we look back on this draft we'll say how could teams consider taking Vince Young over Leinert, as Leinert will have a stellar career. Also I see Reggie Bush getting injured down the road, and when they retire, Lendale White will have had a better career......

There you have it, my 1st official nfl mock draft! Lets take a look at it next week and see how wrong I am.........

Dinner Table - 4/13/06

Name 3 athletes, alive or dead, you'd like to have dinner with. Here's my 3:

1) Jackie Robinson - The man went through so much and handled it all with dignity. I'm sure he'd be very satisfied with how far sports have come with integration.

2) Wilt Chamberlain - You need someone at the table who is full of stories and admittedly I'd be grilling him on all his "conquests".....

3) Babe Didrikson - I had to include 1 woman in the group and it was a tough choice between the greatest female athlete of all time or Anna Kournikova (best looking female athlete of all time!)............ Babe dominated golf and track and field like no female athlete before or since. In golf she won 55 tournaments (including a string of 13 in a row) and she was one of 3 people to start the LPGA tour. In track and field, she won the womans 1st olympic javelin and set a world record in the 80 meter hurdles. She was named the female athlete of the year 6 times.

I think these 3 would be a good start.
